Explore, Learn, Evolve
This website is for people who love to travel.
People who love to explore.
And, for people who want to learn something new.
We founded this website, because we found the others lacking. Most of them are paid to promote products and services – and don’t offer unbiased information. Many publish articles and reviews written by people who rarely voyage beyond their own borders. And even fewer focus on the people who inhabit the places that they write about.
Conflicting tastes and different standards
Take a look at the reviews on Trip Advisor. you’ll find they span such a wide range of responses – from ecstatic to disparaging – that they are practically useless.
Zagat fares a bit better in that they try to distill the comments down to a coherent tone but, again, they are culturally-specific (aka ‘American’).
At the end of the day, what we wanted here at Nomadz.net was to get our travel intelligence from people that really knew the marketplace; people who travel the world on a regular basis and can easily compare a hotel in San Juan to one in San Franciso, or Singapore to Saskatchewan. Either we find someone with similar tastes whose opinion we can trust, or at least someone with higher standards than ourselves – so, we know we won’t be disappointed!
Tell it like it is
We also want to get our news from real insiders. People who will “tell it like it is” and aren’t paid by PR companies to make their clients look good. How many times have you looked forward in anticipation to going somewhere after seeing a glossy brochure, only to find that the end result is nothing like what was promised? You saw pictures of uninhabited white sandy beaches but, instead, found them clogged with screaming children, rude waiters and unhappy tourists…
Different strokes for different folks
The other problem we want to solve is that travel is not a one-size-fits all affair. Sometimes, we want to be pampered in the lap of luxury. Other times, we want to wander off the beaten track. Perhaps we want to do something romantic. Or else, something the whole family can enjoy. The point is that we have different desires at different times – and at different stages in our lives. Unfortunately, many of the travel sites out there presuppose that you fit a certain mold. You are either a back-packer, an epicurean, a business-traveler, or a family on holiday. In fact, we are often all of those things – sometimes all at once!
Through the Lives of Others
Stepping over the threshold into the unknown invites endless possibilities. Most guide books focus on places and things. Sure, we love cool destinations as much as anybody else. But, the promise of travel is that we will make new discoveries. This also means encountering arresting ideas that challenge our preconceptions. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all become anthropologists on tour and really get see the world through the lives of others – rather than being a tourist who barely scratches the surface?
At the end of the day, it’s people that makes really great places, great. For instance, our home town of London is a great city – not because of the monuments, the history, the Queen, or even the unpredictable weather – but because it has a truly diverse population of interesting people from around the world who have fascinating stories. We wanted to hear those stories, find out what it was that they loved about their cities and, in the process, discover something new about the world we live in – including our own backyard.
“We are not Nationals. We are Citizens of the World.”
Our solution is to create a community of seasoned travelers – global citizens – who share their insights, tips and reviews. Not only do they explore the places that they know best but, also, they take us along for the ride on their far-flung adventures. And we invite our community to share their personal stories with one another. By building a map of human experiences – a geolocation-based map-of-dreams, as it were – we hope to make our world more surprising, more interesting and more challenging place, in the hope of expanding our own horizons.
Explore to See… but Seek to Understand
This is what we believe will make us unique: that we want to learn something new each and every time we step out our front door. There is wisdom in the crowd when it comes to shared experience. And it’s the exchange of ideas in the context of travel and exploration that really gets us excited.
What is Nomadz?
Nomadz are people who love to travel. But, unlike most travelers, we don’t seek out the familiar. Instead, we strive to better ourselves by exploring the unknown. Every new experience, every destination, every new person that we meet expands our horizon.
Typically, we have lived on more than one continent and can speak more than one language. Often, we are multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. Intellectually and culturally, we are very diverse. Many of us are architects of the future: entrepreneurs, artists, philosophers and adventurers. But all of us have one thing in common: we rejoice in the creativity of mankind and wish to bring the people of this world closer together.
