Hunan – Chelsea, London

they have a thing for foliage…

It’s very hard to find Chinese cuisine in London that’s non-Canto but here it is. And what a fabulous experience at that. This is home-cooked food. Managed by the second generation of the same Taiwanese ownership. This is a very family affair. You don’t order from a menu. Instead, you will be served what the chef has prepared that day. And you will keep receiving dishes until you ask them to stop.

Be forewarned that the food gets better the more you eat. If you see someone else having braised pork shoulder on a massive platter, you’ll probably have to stay close to the end to prove yourself a worthy customer. Competitive eating? Or, gameification of food?

They will assume that you don’t want the more ‘adventurous’ cuisine – like sea cucumber, offal, and such – so they won’t serve it to you unless you ask for it. They distinguish between the two by asking if you want the ‘Chinese’ menu or the ‘Western’ menu. Don’t worry – the Western menu is authentic enough; you’re not missing out.

This is a seriously good Chinese restaurant that has a very loyal, local clientele. The experience doesn’t come cheap but given the scarcity of QUALITY Chinese that is non-Canton, this is a rare treat.
