Recharging iPads requires special equipment, which is why you should not misplace both the cable and the AC Adapter that came with your original iPad purchase. Otherwise, charging an iPad with the cable and adapter for your iPhone/iPod will take considerably longer.
The other adapters may look identical to the ones that came with your original iPad but they aren’t. To fast charge an iPad, you need a 2.1 amp power supply (or 10 watts, as indicated on the Apple AC Adapter). The specs for an iPad 1 vs iPad 2 charging are the same.
It was only a matter of time until it came to this: you’ve upgraded to the iPad 2 and given your original iPad to your (spouse/child/charity) as a hand-me-down, but now you need to a dual USB recharger to recharge both iPads at the same time. Wouldn’t be nice if someone came up with a recharging solution to stop you fighting over electrical sockets?
It’s even harder to find a single USB for iPad charger that can rapidly recharge two iPads simultaneously. You are more likely to find an AC Adapter that will recharge an iPad and an iPhone at the same time.
However, the XtremeMac IPU-IH2-11 does have two 2.1 amp ports for fast recharging two iPads at once. So far, it’s one of the few solutions available on the market.
If all you want is a device to recharge an iPhone/iPad AND an iPad, then you are spoilt for choice. XtremeMac InCharge devices should do just fine.
I’m also a big fan of the Scosche reVIVE II. Its prongs swivel flat inside the casing like the XtremeMac but the device is rounded and takes up a bit more space. Still, it’s compact and does its job well – recharging a single iPad and iPhone in record time.
Bear in mind that rapid recharging puts more wear and tear on your device’s batteries. You might prolong their lifespan if you’re willing to wait.
With this in mind, check out the 4-port Kensington USB recharger, which has four USB ports to recharge four devices at once. It only has a max rating of 2amps, so it will trickle charge a bunch of iPhone/iPods and only barely cater to a single iPad. However, you might find it a useful solution for charging your Amazon Kindle, iPhone, iPod and iPad all at the same time. If you leave them overnight – all tethered to this device – they will all be at 100% in the morning.
