After giving an ETA of late 2012, Seagate has jumped ahead of expectation and delivered its Thunderbolt adapter for GoFlex. If you’re unfamiliar with the GoFlex range, they are basically Seagate hard drives that can be docked to different adapters that support different forms of connectivity: SATA, Firewire, USB and, now, Thunderbolt.
Initial performance reviews seem to be very good. Here’s one reviewer who has experienced 180MB/s in their test.
The price of the adapter is a bit steep for what it is – roughly $200 USD – but if you have a need for speed, there really isn’t much else that you can buy at this price for your Mac. However, you are able to plug any SATA drive into it – which makes it useful for swapping out backup hard drives.
The Seagate adapter doesn’t come with a Thunderbolt cable which, for the time being, you’ll need to buy from Apple Direct.
