Superlative Sushi. I’ve never tasted better.
I went for lunch in the summer of 2008, just after it had received its three Michelin stars.
There was only enough seating for 8 people when I went for lunch – although it can now apparently accommodate 10. Mizutani-san served us himself with the help of one assistant.
It was Omakase, although chef Mizutani did ask if there was anything we didn’t eat. You really need to speak Japanese, though, because he doesn’t know much English. He had another diner there who had been following him around the country, eating at his restaurants for twenty years. Now that’s fandom dedication!
Quite simply, this is the best sushi I have ever had. He cleverly seasoned shellfish in ways that brought out their most sublime flavour. The experience was intimate, very personal and unforgettable.
I ate with a friend for 250,000 yen each. It was worth every penny.
