We purchased a Transcend 1TB SSD external drive with combined Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces. The speed of the Thunderbolt interface was significantly faster and we used the drive to backup and catalog 60,000 photos in Lightroom.
Unfortunately, the Transcend drive kept disconnecting itself intermittently and we got the dreaded Mac alert that the drive had not been ejected properly.
At first, we thought it might be the Thunderbolt cable we were using, so we purchased a brand new one from Apple. That didn’t fix the problem. We had attached the Transcend drive to a Macbook Pro and were aware that when the MacBook went to sleep it could also shut down the SSD drive, but this wasn’t the issue. The drive would simply disconnect in the middle of a data transfer, or disconnect when it was idle. In fact, we could not find any rhyme or reason to it.
The drive worked perfectly when connected via USB.
At this point, we aren’t sure if this is a bug between the drive and the MacBook Pro, so we’ll test the thunderbolt interface on another computer. However, in the meantime we must caution buyers that there could be something seriously wrong with the drive’s Thunderbolt interface.
