This is a travel gadget made after my own heart – a portable, hand-pump mini espresso machine that you can take anywhere to enjoy freshly made espresso!
The technology behind it is simple but genius. The whole unit weighs less than a pound and can be held in one hand. You open the top to put in your coffee, which can be ground beans or a coffee capsule (it supports Caffitaly and Nespresso capsules), pour some hot water into the base (you’ll need a separate thermos of hot water), then you turn a knob on the side to release and pop out the hand pump. Start pumping and coffee comes out!
The pump generates the same 116 psi of pressure recommended as standard for all espresso machines. By hand pumping, however, you don’t blast the coffee and hot water with cold air, as might happen in an electric pump. Because of the short distance from water tank to cup, your water should stay hot. And if you watch the video, you’ll see that you can get a beautiful crema on top of the shot.
You can’t pop the Minipresso into a dishwasher but must rinse it out by hand after every use.
There are three basic models, depending upon whether you want to use your own ground beans, Caffitaly or Nespresso. I wish you could mix and match components, because I like to use my own coffee sometimes and capsules at other times, but it doesn’t seem as if this is possible. You can buy some additional accessories, each of which cost $25, such as a larger water tank, carry case, or extra coffee grind containers, so you can prepare more in advance of your trip.
Each model can be purchased direct from Wacaco and is shipped anywhere in the world from Hong Kong. You can also purchase it from Amazon.
